The Rock Closes His Store for the Last Time

Today was a sad day for me. One that I'll never forget. I watched in disbelief as my best friend closed his doors to the public for the last time at 3:00 today. Herbert Jewelers is no more.

All of the Herbert family was present as well as a few friends who hung around to the end. For me, it was almost like attending a wake, only it was the store that gone, not a person. They tried to make it a happy occasion with champagne and cake. There was a toast to the 65 years that the store was in existence.

Some of the people were there to so they could say they purchased something on the last day or they were the last customer. I couldn't bring myself to do either one.

One bit of joy was seeing Jasmine, Lauren's daughter, meet and greet the public. She seemed so grown only to be 11 1/2. Her baby sister Molly age a few months was a delight as well. Everyone wanted to hold her except me. I'm scared of babies.

With mixed emotions I shook Dennis's hand and wished him well. I told him I still couldn't believe what was happening. He said "I hope a month from now, I don't wake up and wonder what have I done?"

There will still be some work to do behind closed doors. A lot of cleaning up and disposing of remaining merchandise. It will be a while before the store is completely empty.

Main Street won't be the same without Herbert Jewelers. Neither will I.
