Herbert Jewelers Mailbag - Part 2
How foolishly I went blithly along thinking Herbert's would just always be there.
Time does move on -- faster than most of us wish -- and we always have to cope with change. But,
Dennis and Peggy, this is a BIG one for all of us. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Like so many others who wrote, I bought
my wedding china and crystal from Herbert's, and every single piece of "good" jewelry my mother owned
Daddy bought at Herbert's. (Debbie and I and Mother's grandchildren are still wearing those pieces)
And up to the last of his 88 years y'all were so kind and good to Daddy whenever he'd drop by with more God
Boxes for Dennis to have to deal with. I remember walking to the old picture show as a child and always
stopping just to window shop and dream of wearing all the "sparklies" on display.
Dennis, since
the time we were in school together to the last time I dropped in the store on a visit home, you've always
greeted me with a smile. You and Peggy were wonderful representatives of hometown goodness, integrity,
and friendship. We're all gonna miss not being able to window shop or drop in or send our husbands in
hoping they'll remember what we've been telling them we want for months and months before that
birthday/anniversary/Christmas.
But as sad as it is to see you go, I wish you Godspeed on the
next leg of your journey. And I hope all the heartfelt comments from your lifelong customers
and friends can make the journey sweeter.
Bye Bye.

What a sad announcement!!! From friendship rings to fine china to most recently a sterling chain
and mounting of a turquoise piece from a special friend. This icon will be sorely missed, but time has a way
of closing and opening chapters in our lives. I rejoice with Dennis and Peggy that they will now be free to
spend more quality time with friends and family. Thankfully the happy memories can never be taken away.
I thank God for those treasures and the treasure of these two stellar friends.

I have to say that although I am a newcomer to the valley, I, too felt a keen sense of loss
over the news that Herbert's is closing. I had come to depend on them for my various repair and unique gift needs,
as well as being the happy receiver of surprises containing their seal. I will certainly miss them.
Sincerely,
Susan Clark

James:
Thank you for keeping us posted on events in and around Fort Valley! Each of your missives have a way of evoking memories of what it was like growing up in a small but very special Southern town.
Dennis was a "little tyke" when Mr. and Mrs. Herbert allowed me to work as a temporary clerk (in their original locations as well as the current one) in summers and Christmas breaks during my college years at Wesleyan in Macon. Mr. Herbert, not a man of many words, was always working in the back on watches, rings, settings and other paraphernalia needing his expert attention. Mrs. Herbert's marvelously beautiful smile and her quiet inviting demeanor with patrons remain in my memory as reminders of her Southern charm and grace. She was so talented in preparing Brides for their lives as "Lady of the Manor" with her well-chosen dining settings and "not to forget" the "rings" to accommodate wedded bliss.
How many of us can say their rings came from Herberts? The Herberts lived by strict personal standards and obviously conveyed their talents to young Dennis (I can't believe he has graying hair!)
I can only imagine that wonderful happenings are in store for Dennis and Peggy (I'm sorry that I didn't know her, too). Perhaps there'll be another "Herberts Jewelry" in the future -- maybe online?
I wish them and you the best!

No reason to stay in Fort Valley anymore....especially if you
plan on closing Khoury's one day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Just as we get back in the area! I can say this. Retirement, of which I have been partaking for about 2 months, is GREAT!! Naps in the afternoon become a habit! Actually talking to your spouse about things other than work is nice! Moving back close to friends and family is great!
Carolyn and I will miss finally being able to come by. Guess we will have to visit more formally, with you guys and the Khoury's.
Our prayers are for you two to have a long and well deserved retirement. The Herberts have been the standard for Ft Valley and the surrounding area for jewelry for as long as I can remember.
Once these boxes are all unpacked, in about 6 months the way it is going,
we'll be in touch and maybe wwe can all rekindle old friendships and help each other through the retirement years.
Of course we will have to adjust our schedules to that youngster James and his work schedule!!
IN GOD WE TRUST!

Thanks for sharing the sad, but beautiful, story of the closing of Herbert's Jewelers. Peggy and Dennis helped many people express their love and affection with their jewelry products.
If you have the address and the time, would you send me Peggy's and Dennis' e-mail address.
Warmest regards,
David Llindholm

James,
This is sad news for the town and for my youngest
son Michael. Every other Greene boy has had the privilege of purchasing their wedding rings at Herbert Jewelry, including
me and my two brothers, two of my three sons, and most recently Ernest?s son, Ernest, Jr. It will be missed!!

So sad to see Herbert's close after all
these years. Know you are sad to see them close. You both are the institutions of your area.
I'm sure Dennis
and Peggy want time now to do some things they been wanting to do before they can not travel any more and to spend time the
the grand children.
Give them my best and I wish them well for the future.

OMG - I didn't see this one coming. It's almost Christmas. I don't buy jewelry anywhere else.The
Herbert's have done such great work refurbishing the Marshall and Wooddall family jewels over the years. Dennis has designed
and created several unique pieces for us. With four marriages under my belt ( no pun intended ),
I've certainly given them plenty
of business and will miss my friends. I wish them all the BEST.
