the Subject of The Candy Kitchen
James, thanks for all the hard work you do to keep all
of us informed on current and so many wonderful events of the past.
Memories are wonderful and we are so fortunate to have grown up in Fort Valley
with all the fantastic years we had there. I don't understand why you
don't remember in the late "40's" Jamie (Sanders) Arnold worked for Pete and Gus
for a few years and I am sure served 1000's of hot dogs!! We graduated in
'52 so she could have been there during the early 50's.
Thanks again -

Hi,
James,
My
grandparents came from Rome, Georgia to visit us in Fort Valley every November. They always
bought and took back to Rome masses of a thick peanut brittle that I am almost
certain came from the Candy Kitchen. I have faint memory, I believe, of
heavy marble slabs on which they poured the candy for cooling. The Candy
Kitchen was also my first experience with thick bulk chocolate candy, like
Hershey, broken-up into large irregular shapes and sold from the glass
cases. It has been so long ago. I think I remember all that
in association with Candy Kitchen but, at near-60, I question a lot of things I
think I remember.
As
I mentioned once before to you, you and Jerri Lynn are the glue that has held
all our memories together these many years.
Thanks for being that!

James,
A
thought for the Peach Festival….how about a “Pete & Gus Hot Dog Sauce
Contest For us dog (not Dawg) lovers, I would come just to partially
experience your readers’memories of this Fort Valley culinary treat. Of course, you
could expand the taste treat competition to include their other candy
specialties as well; coupled with the world largest peach cobbler you would have
quite a draw. Look out Nu-Way.

James,
I have so enjoyed reading all the comments about the Candy
Kitchen. It was really one of my favorite places and would I frequently
grab a bite there before going back to work at the theatre. This, of
course, was in the 40's to 50's.
I also have vivid memories of going there with my Daddy and a
man from Macon that had either one or two monkeys or chimpanzees would
be there. Pete and Gus would always give the monkeys a banana and I
loved watching them peel the bananas, while sitting there leaning against the
magazine racks.
The other thing that amused me at that age was the fact that
the man had baby car seats for the animals.
It was interesting that Randall Preston developed a sauce much
like that of the Candy Kitchen. My husband and I would love to have a
copy of it. My husband grew up in Charlotte, NC and has commented on a
place there that must have been a mirror of The Candy Kitchen.
What fun it is to reminisce my childhood days. On
another note from Sherrie below, her dad (Dr. Nathan) was my doctor and I
graduated with her brother David. Another thought, I thought her mother
was a beautiful lady.

James - I am excited as my wife has produced our first batch
of Pete &
Gus' special hot dog sauce ( compliments of Randall
Preston's
recipe ). I will be doing a "taste test" prior to the
Georgia football
game today. I will keep you posted on how it
goes. Just in case, Jean
also made me some of her world famous
chili which is always great on
game day.
Go
Dawgs.

PS - excited about the up coming (Class of '66) 60th
birthday party. The music is
ready.

JAMES, As a TECH parent, it hurts for me to admit
that one can have so much fun as you apparently were having in
Athens. However, if Tech fans acted in Atlanta like Dawg
fans do in Athens, we'd spend some time in the pokey. By the
way, Duke Lane told me that from your picture, it looked like you were in
training to take over at left tackle. Go YellowJackets.

We were there also and saw you and Cheryl leaving the
field, just before the Academic All Americans were introduced. We were
there to see a friend from Fernandina's nephew introduced. He is an
Academic All American swimmer at UGA. It was great football
weather, and a great game. Keep the EMails coming..

James,
Thanks for the photos. They bring back so
many memories. My mother worked at Strickland's in the 60's and I worked
there during Christmas vacations. I remember how much I enjoyed being a
part of the downtown Christmas spirit. Please let Nick know that I hope
all is well with him and his family. I would love to catch up if he feels
like dropping me an email.
