On the Subject of the Pete & Gus Hot Dog Sauce

James,

I finally produced a sauce that will ALMOST duplicate their sauce and will share it with anyone that wants it, but no one can get it just right.

Boy, that brings back memories!  Gene and I both worked there....Gene did not show up one Sat. and they hired me!  They used to bring us candy to the house every Christmas and when they made ice cream always send Mama some!  I worked there about 2 years I think till I was old enough to work at Edward's Dept. Store and then on to the theater.  If anyone had the recipe, it would be the old black gentleman who helped them.  I know for a fact it had NO meat in it tho.  It had the texture of Tabasco...I dipped many a spoonful over hot dogs...the buns were steamed in a double steamer and they were the best!!!!

Hi James,

I remember the Candy Kitchen very well.  My brothers Philip and Rufus Moncrief could eat a bucketful of these hotdogs.  Another of the special things about Pete and Gus's hot dogs were the delicious steamed buns.  I would take my brothers in there, they would get a couple hotdogs, sit down to eat them while they enjoyed a comic book.  When they finished eating, they would so neatly put the comic book back on the shelf.  Pete and Gus knew they did this and never said a word.  Don't get me wrong they also bought a lot of comic books too.  I loved the hot doges too, I just couldn't eat as many as they did.  I also remember all the good candy they had.   I wish I had one of their hot dogs and a piece of candy now.

Does anyone remember or have pictures of the grocery stores, Dr. Pepper and Moncrief's Grocery.  They were in the vacinty of all the barber shops that now stand close to Fred's?  My mom and Dad owned the Moncrief's Grocery and of course we worked there too.

Thanks for all the memories James

James.

Back a few years ago Ed Dent opened a place on highway 96 in Fort Valley called The Wheel (I think) after the one Betty Gregory's father, Jake, had at Five Points.  He had the closest thing to the original Pete and Gus sauce that has been produced.  Ed is Wilder Dent's brother and the last I heard he was in Daytona Beach, Florida.  You might want to check with Ed.

On the Subject of Halprin's Clothing Store

James,

Someone from the Bremen Jewish Museum is coming to do a video on Momma (Muriel Halprin Nathan), her parents and our family while we lived in Fort Valley.  Would it be possible for you to share some of the old photos you might have of my grandfather's store, some of the early peach blossom festival photos that my Momma might be in, any photos of Daddy, (Dr. Dan Nathan) etc.?  I don't exactly know the links and/or how you have the photos cataloged.  I'd appreciate any help you might give me.

What a wonderful service you are providing!  Hope you and yours are doing well. Come visit us when you get to North Georgia.

Best regards,
