The Phernandina Pig

Our last night in Fernandina, we tried a new restaurant, Cedar River Seafood based on a recommendation by world traveler and connoisseur of food, Jimmy Jones. The restaurant was not fancy, but as usual the food was good and reasonable.

Monday morning meant packing up and coming back home, but we had one more meal at the condo - breakfast. Once again The Kondo Kings outdid themselves and prepared a feast fit for Kings & Queens. What made this meal special were the home made barbequed ribs that The Rock brought from home. The ribs were fully cooked, so all we had to do was heat them up and serve them with Rock's special recipe BBQ sauce. Ribs may not sound good for breakfast, but think about it...we eat bacon, sausage, ham...all come from the same animal, the pig. Try it, you will like it.

Which brings us to the storyline about The Phernandina Pig (see photo below). Not only did 'Rock' bring the real thing (ribs) from home, Peg brought the ceremonial pig created by "Beff" Cleveland and presented as a Christmas present. The ceremonial pig has all the names of the Phernandina Gang and memorable bylines inscribed on it. Even though "Beff"and others weren't on this trip, they were not far from our minds and hearts.

Our last meal together was on the road in Waycross in an Italian restaurant called Cavagnaro's. After all the seafood for the past three days, this was a welcome treat. Owned by a local Italian family, the fare was excellent and we highly recommend it unless Jerry J's is open.

We were actually down at Phernandina also over Memorial Day weekend.  Glad you all were able to make it again keeping the special tradition going.  We stayed right next door to you at Amelia Surf & Racket.  But we were focused on celebrating my mother-in-law's 80th birthday more than anything else.  I'm hoping that we can go back down again during the summer.

We talked to some friends that were at the Ritz on Friday night.  That wedding ceremony was held outside on the beach, and the reception was indoors and started around the time of the storms.  We saw the "For Sale" sign & were so upset over the closing of the "Down Under".  Maybe somebody will open it again, but it had been a family-owned business for many, many years!!  Do you ever go to Baxters or Sliders?

Early Sat. morning my brother-in-law took my husband and son out fishing on the backside of Amelia Island where the Nassau River and the inter coastal waterway come together.  They caught some "red fish" and Jason caught a large shark, so he will be eating shark steaks for awhile.

We enjoyed hearing about your annual adventures to Phernandina, and look forward to the Peach Festival!!
